Mode 1

Direct connection of the vehicle to the grid using a simple non-dedicated domestic socket, this method is the slowest way to charge a vehicle. Mode 1 charging is unmonitored and so poses a risk of overheating, because of this Mode 1 has been prohibited in several countries.

Mode 2

Direct connection of the vehicle to the grid via a charge monitoring cable, which then plugs into a non-dedicated domestic socket. This method provides a safe and acceptable rate of charge

Direct connection of the vehicle to the grid via a dedicated charge socket allowing for a much faster charge. The socket outlet also monitors the battery of the vehicle. The dedicated cable can be removable or permanently attached to the charger.

Indirect connection of the vehicle to the grid via a dedicated external charger with incorporated direct-current charge monitoring. The dedicated cable is usually permanently attached to the charger. This is currently the fastest method to charge a vehicle.
